In June 2014 I began working as Site Consultant Ecologist for EDF's Hinkley Point C nuclear power station construction and associated development sites. Being based on site three days a week, tasks included undertaking site checks with the environmental team, providing ecological advise to contractors, ensuring works were being undertaken in line with the Habitat Management Plan, reviewing RAM's, attending site meetings, updating reports and plans, administrative tasks and providing ecological supervision (ECoW).Was heavily involved in the mitigation measures regarding badgers. This involved assisting the badger consultant with installing and pre-baiting badger traps, checking and releasing of captured badgers, gating and closing of badger setts, ‘live digging’ badger setts and assisting with the construction of artificial setts. Tasks on the associated development sites involved monthly ecological audit checks, resurveying for badger activity, attending meetings and previously undertaking GCN and reptile translocation visits. The project required extensive client liaison and project manager communication.. In between working on the HPC project I assisted the ecology team throughout the summer with a variety of protected species surveys such as bats, great crested newts and reptiles.
