By working on my own projects, I have developed my design, organisation and communication skills on over 50 projects, working with clients and contractors across the country. In the summer of 2021 I designed, managed, and self-built a timber framed garden room for a playwright. The project required financial management and build programming skills. The Classic Architecture Company is a small practice with a focus on traditional and contemporary residential architecture. I have worked at all RIBA work stages including gaining planning permission and listed building consent on a number of challenging sites. I have worked where necessary with planning consultant, ecologists, landscaping consultants, surveyors, heritage consultants, and tree consultants as well as Quantity Surveyors. I have experience with a number of interesting historic and modern building techniques and technologies including: MVHR systems, traditional oak frames, frameless glass, swimming pools, window/door joinery, restoration, SIPs and flint work. In the last two years of my employment I moved away from compiling planning and detailed design packages and into a more senior position. I managed a small team of architectural technicians and focused mainly on the ‘job running’ of projects with weekly site inspections, resolving on-site technical issues, contract administration and valuation of interim certificates. I enjoy working closely with clients and contractors. Furthermore, I also took on projects from inception taking two projects from pre-planning through to detailed design and onto final completion.

This American owned company based in Chile is a social enterprise that funds voluntary projects through English teaching. Over ten months I created, implemented and completed a project based in Santiago to teach a group of underprivileged children about architecture, recycling and how to build. I partnered with a local school, a local Non-Governmental Organization and the local council. The project went ahead in two phases: during the three weeks of phase one I taught the children how to design by drawing and model making at different scales using a curriculum I had created myself. The children designed a school, their dream house and then worked collaboratively to design a real life garden for their school. Phase two involved physically constructing the children’s designs, this lasted for six weeks and included the successful build of a large bench constructed from concrete and recycled bottle bricks that were collected by the school. The entire project was conducted in Spanish.

Fundación Las Parcelas is a small charity that cares for a group of around 40 children in a very deprived area of Santiago in Chile. I volunteered my time to design a small structure (Galpon) and playground to be used by Fundación Las Parcelas. This was an opportunity to lead a project from inception to completion and a useful lesson in communication through drawing. I still keep links with this charity and recently fundraised to help pay for the relocation and expansion of the charity. The eighteen months that I spent at Quattro Design over three stints between my university course were split evenly between the “Housing” team and the “Health, Education and Community” team. This allowed me to work on a wide variety of different projects of varying scale and budget that included social housing, hospitals, schools, nurseries and colleges. Often I would be required to work on several projects across teams simultaneously. In this summer job I worked on various sites in Gloucestershire, predominately in restoration and bespoke installations. I worked in a team alongside other trades on small and large scale projects: the type of work ranged from sourcing stone from quarries, heavy lifting, spot measurements, pointing and mortar mixing. In the summer of 2008 I assisted in the conversion of a local Inn into a home for my employer’s family.
