Louise Hicks
Chris and I primarily worked together over a number of years on reform efforts to the Victorian coronial system and coronial systems around the country. Chris was the key driver in the establishment of the Australian Inquest Alliance and is an expert in coronial law and practice. Chris approaches her work in collaboration with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Services with sensitivity and patience.

I provided the legal liaison and primary submission work for Save Westernport in the recent Environment Effects Statement process, which resulted in the Minister's Assessment that the proposed Crib Point gas project should not proceed. I shifted some of my focus to environmental law and advocated on waste/landfill issues with Western Region Environment Centre, and engaged with reforms to the Environment Protection Authority and related legislation. I represented the owners of over 300 properties at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal in a three-day hearing against our local council, largely on environmental grounds. The case was complex and included probably one of the first tests of the new VCAT fee structure, which tends to have a chilling effect on community cases such as this. We succeeded via media publicity in raising the money needed, and then won our case in December 2016. Mornington Peninsula Council is currently consulting with the Somers community about what we really want. Show less

My policy and law reform work focused on family violence, including family violence deaths; national coronial reform; and disability and mental health issues, especially where they concern violence against women. In 2015 I was nominated for the Tim McCoy Award. I regularly acted as duty lawyer for involuntary psychiatric patients, including providing representation at Mental Health Review Board hearings. Many of my clients also sought advice concerning guardianship and administration matters, and I represented clients in the Guardianship list at VCAT.
