The Project’s object is to design a whole new optical system that can use cylindrical lenses to achieve Fiber Bragg grating inscription in the fiber. The whole work involves aberration analysis of the anamorphic system, tolerance analyzing, and optimization process. In this project, I design the whole system from the ground in Zemax that can achieve the project requirement and simulate the results, thus to help the people on the Lab-side to build up the real system. I use Zemax software to give a complete aberration composition analysis, then calculated various different approaches for an optical system to inscribe fiber Bragg gratings with anamorphic systems for applications in material processing. I developed a brand new Matlab tools to simulate the behavior of the system in a physical framework that will not only achieve optimization process that conventional method cannot do, but also can evaluate the system performance in a more direct way. With a brand new Freeform surface representation invented by G. Forbes, it is not clear how the new representation performs in optimization problems for optical system, thus is the main goal of the project: to evaluate the optimization performance of the ‘Forbes’ Freeform’ representation. In the project, introduced the brand new representation into optimization processes and check optimization results in different situation and different optical systems. I developed mathematical algorithms to describe and optimize freeform surfaces in optical systems mainly based on Matlab and Zemax. Show less

      G. Forbes Invented the brand new asphere and Freeform representation based on orthogonal polynomi- als. The project is mainly for mathematical modeling and implementing the new Freeform surface representation in MATLAB. I implemented the Matlab program that is able to come up with the whole orthogonal basis using Gram-Schmidt processing and achieve all goals mentioned above.
