The Centre for Talented Youth Ireland provides enrichment courses for students with high academic ability. I design and teach marine biology, zoology and oceanography courses to primary school students ranging from 6 to 13 years old. I combine powerpoint presentations with hands-on activities (such as the study of live or preserved animal specimens) to create a fun learning environment. I work as an invigilator, and a team leader for the University College Dublin examinations. My responsibilities include supervision of students and staff, time-keeping, report writing and organization of exam scripts. Accuracy and attention to detail are key attributes required for this job, along with tact and sensitivity to assist emotional students and those with disabilities.

The objectives of my PhD research were to:1. Draw on meteorological research to derive realistic scenarios for changes in climatic disturbance regimes in Irish coastal systems.2. Simulate disturbance regimes involving multiple stressors at appropriate levels for frequency, intensity and variance to test impacts on marine benthic communities.3. Assess consequences for ecosystem functioning and the provision of ecosystem services. This was a largely independent piece of work, that I am extremely proud of. I successfully designed and carried out a survey on shorelines in North Dublin, and two experiments in Malahide Marina, Dublin to collect data investigating the impacts of climate change on marine ecosystems. I carried out extensive field work, and follow up laboratory work. I coordinated teams to assist me in the field. I collated all data and managed it in Microsoft Excel. I statistically analysed data using R, Minitab, Gmav and PRIMER. I carried out extensive literature research and published the work as a paper in Marine Environmental Research (Kinsella and Crowe, 2015) and as a thesis.I have a second scientific paper in review. I submitted my PhD before the University deadline and successfully defend it in a viva voce examination. Show less

I thoroughly enjoyed my time working as an intern for BirdWatch Ireland. I assisted in sea bird surveys in Dublin Bay, Dublin Port and on Bray Head, improving my bird identification skills, knowledge of bird ecology and of surveys. In the office, I collated over 20 years of data on roseate terns using Microsoft Access and Excel. I also assisted the seabird team in the submission of a tender for work before a targeted deadline. • Marine Ecology Research bursary
      • May 2011 - Jul 2011

For the first half of the bursary I assisted a marine ecology PhD student with experimental fieldwork in Carnsore Point, Co, Wexford. The experiment aimed to investigate the effects of copper and nutrients on the the functioning of algal assemblages. The work consisted of collecting and identifying algae, creating algal assemblages using wire mesh and taking respiration and photosynthesis measurements. For the remainder of the bursary I carried out an experiment to collect extra data to assist in the publication of a paper by Dr. Eoin O Gorman.. The experiment aimed to investigate the effect of temperature on the interaction between Carcinus maenas and its prey, Mytilus edulis. I collected the organisms, set up the experiment in the MarBEE aquarium laboratory, measured the feeding rate of Carcinus and compiled the results for analysis. Show less

      • Jun 2010 - Aug 2010

For two months I worked as a bursary student for the Marine Institute (MI) in Dunmore East, Waterford. This involved both field and lab work. My first role involved working independently for the MI on small boats with local crab fishermen. I collected data on their catch, by-catch and discards recording the species collected (mainly Cancer pagarus and Nephrops norvegicus), their abundance and some measurements including carapace length/width. I also took part in some field surveys sampling cockle populations in local coastal areas. My second role involved working in the laboratory with two other students as part of a team identifying and sorting fish catches, taking otoliths, measuring and sexing Nephrops sp. samples, removing microtags and inputting data into the MI database. I really enjoyed my time with the Marine Institute and it increased my confidence in working in the lab and at sea. Show less
