  Effect of carabid beetle diversity on foraging behaviour and seed predation Farming relies heavily on herbicides in order to ensure crop production. An increasing awareness of the adverse effects of pesticides has triggered the search for alternative pest management strategies. Recent research suggests that the predation of weed seeds by naturally occurring seed consumers can impact weed population dynamics. In temperate agricultural systems, carabid beetles appear to be the main invertebrate consumers of weed seeds. However, predicting weed seed depletion rates in field conditions remains difficult as carabid trophic responses are still not well understood. In particular, interactions within and between carabid species could strongly affect their potential to deliver the ecosystem service of weed seed predation. Within carabid communities, the diversity of species might lead either to functional complementarity or antagonism between species that affect predation. We hypothesise that the presence of individuals from different guilds of carabids will modify within and between species interactions, changing both the rate of weed seed predation and the range of weed seeds eaten. The student will test and compare the seed consumption of different carabid assemblages (with granivorous, omnivorous and/or carnivorous) in the presence of various combinations of weed seed species.
