Bio
Adriana Tolentino
Chieko is a dedicated educator with a passion for teaching Japanese culture. She engages students in the learning of language through the door of culture, making sure students use what they learn in the classroom outside in the community or in their daily lives. Chieko is a supportive colleague, interested in engaging with fellow language professionals in presenting or discussing pedagogical research.

Yamazaki Sensei is one of the most dedicated and caring educators I have ever had the privilege of studying under. During my time as her pupil, she went above and beyond, generously devoting her time and effort to enrich her classes with extracurricular learning opportunities and activities. Every year she would organize a Bon Odori team, teach students traditional Japanese festival dances, dress us with yukata from her personal collection, and bring us all to the St. Petersburg International Folk Fair. Her energy was central to the success of Eckerd's Japanese program. She valued the relationships she built with her students, and her office door was always open. As a freshman, I signed up for Japanese 101 on a whim. I continued to study Japanese at Eckerd, in large part, because of Yamazaki Sensei. Her support and guidance were crucial to my success in my first job after graduation, when I moved to Japan to teach English. I will always be thankful for the impact she has had on my life and education, and to this day consider her an important mentor and friend.
