Seasonal position. I work both on the field and in the lab. My duties include collecting insects caught in our traps throughout the city and county, identifying mosquito species, recording their numbers, calculating the daily totals and averages of what we caught, and testing for West Nile Virus. I also survey marked sites throughout the county to locate mosquito larvae and subsequently treating these sites with ecologically-safe pesticide. Seasonal position. Transferred from Mayville State University to continue working as a research assistant. Along with the experience addressed in my experience at Mayville State, I developed skills in designing and implementing experiments out in the field, particularly for different tactics in restoring native vegetation and control invasive species in the grasslands and wetlands. I also gained more experience in designing and presenting posters, discussing research with diverse groups of people, as well as how to write for research through working on my Master's thesis. I learned how to use laboratory equipment and various experiments such as Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), protein extraction, histone extraction, and how to run gels for these extractions. I also maintained the laboratory, greenhouse, and plants (nine bean cultivars, wheat, and rice) that were used for our experiments. I led and taught teams of diverse people throughout two summers on how to conduct these experiments, as well as managed the overall activity in the lab. I have also gained experience in writing for research by writing abstracts and posters, as well as presenting our research to various conferences and communicating with professors and students during these sessions.
