  My design research focuses on Visual Communication design and Illustration and explores expertise, design thinking, creative practice and tacit knowledge. I examine the skills and knowledge to further the understanding of these disciplines and to develop strategies to share this knowledge. Also, the understanding and articulation of tacit knowledge will continue to expand the usefulness of design expertise beyond its conventional application and into contributions to social and environmental issues. Currently, I am investigating visual systems of representation for the natural sciences that support the transference of knowledge from the expert to the novice and also advance the process of species identification. The focus is on the link in expertise between the Ornithologist and VC designer in the context of bird identification processes. Results revealed that both fields rely on spatial awareness, and categorisation and Gestalt laws of visual organisation, as well as theories of colour standardisation and dual coding. Understanding the link in expertise across disciplines enables the designer to create visual systems that speak directly to the human perceptual-motor system. In other words, the designer holds the knowledge and expertise to design effective communication that the audience can understand at a conscious level but also at a tacit level.   I am responsible for undertaking the detailed assessment of applications from HE providers. The position involves direct participation in regulatory processes, including negotiating of scope, and undertaking analysis of, and making expert judgments on, evidence and material submitted to TEQSA by providers or gathered from other sources. I also have the responsibility for managing the relationship with a number of HE providers. I am responsible for undertaking the detailed assessment of applications from HE providers.
