Jul 2016 - Aug 2018
As a Coastal Resource Management Volunteer in the Philippines I worked to assist the coastal communities’ efforts to implement restoration and protection of marine habitats and to enhance food security through participative community action on fisheries management. I worked with a local government unit to implement integrated CRM plans, assist my host community with environmental education and training, and helped establish the basis for legal protection of fish stocks and marine habitats. The Environmental Protection Commission (EPC) was created in 1967 by Florida legislature to protect the air, water, and soils, of Hillsborough county from pollution. EPC's Biological Monitoring Program collects data for the estuarine waters of Tampa Bay, including segments of Manatee and Pinellas counties. Benthic organisms living in sediments are an excellent indicator of the health of our environment. Benthic organisms living in sediments are an excellent indicator of the health of our environment. Data from this program has been used with our water quality monitoring data to assess the overall health of Tampa Bay since 1993. During my time as an environmental technician I worked on The Biological Monitoring Program in the benthic lab preparing, sorting, and identifying macro-invertebrates in sediment samples from across the Tampa Bay. I separated aquatic macro-invertebrates from the samples within the 80% margin and identified them by phylum. Finally, I assisted on sea-borne sample collection expeditions. As an environmental education intern for Tampa Bay Watch, I worked with the environmental education team to lead programs with school children grades K-12. I led laboratory and boat sessions about the Tampa Bay estuary, and it’s organisms with children ages K-12. I led groups of children in salt marsh grass replanting at Fort De Soto Beach to combat beach erosion. I worked with +20 volunteers to create 10 concrete oyster domes to place in the Tampa Bay to promote oyster growth. Day to day… Show more As an environmental education intern for Tampa Bay Watch, I worked with the environmental education team to lead programs with school children grades K-12.
