Protect our Watersheds (POW) - our mission is to connect community schools to the local watersheds in a way that creates a solid foundation of stewardship and understanding of our area's resources. POW believes that foundational social impact starts with scientific understanding and is sustained through the creation of strong community connections. Protecting our Watersheds, LLC offers a variety of water-centered educational services as well as consultation for local lake associations and environmental organizations.POW is currently partnering with TCAPS' LEAP program in two of our local elementary schools, bringing environmental concepts to life within the classroom using materials found within our local watersheds.About us- Kathryn and Chelsea created POW to combine their diverse skill set to promote freshwater science and issues in our region. They have worked for years with various local environmental agencies and spoken at multiple water-focused conferences. They’re well versed in teaching and presenting as a partnership and both have the educational and field experience to teach scientific and environmental concepts. Their social impact business Protect Our Watersheds or POW! will bring watershed science into our public school classrooms in new and innovative ways. POW has a passion for understanding the issues that impact our local watersheds and believes that early childhood enrichment programs are the foundation for creating good stewardship practices within our community. POW’s partnership with TCAPS LEAP program creates an opportunity for Traverse City parents to involve their children in STEM curriculum and activities they may wish them to have more exposure to.Update: sadly the COVID-19 pandemic brought this business venture to a close as there was no room for virtual learning experiences during the quarantine and beyond. It was a pleasure working with your students and the TCAPS/LEAP office staff, this venture will always have a special place.

    • Adopt-A-Stream Intern
      • Sep 2019 - Dec 2019

In September of 2019, I was recruited by Heather Smith, Traverse City's "Baykeeper" to assist with the “Adopt-A-Stream” program. My role was to aid in the facilitation of the Fall 2019 phase. I was selected for this internship because of previous experience I’ve had coordinating and facilitating team stream sampling for the Manistee Conservation District (Spring and Fall 2018). Both organizations follow MiCorps sampling protocol, data collection, and data entry so I was familiar with how to process the results of the collection. Another aspect of the internship was aquatic macroinvertebrate identification, specifically being able to identify typical aquatic macros found in this area down to the order. I also assisted with the training of new Watershed Center volunteers, helped with equipment management and data entry on various other platforms. This internship earned me college credits toward my bachelor of science program at Grand Valley State University.
