The Campaign to Abolish Statutes of Limitation (CASOL) is a national effort to end reporting time limits for rape and sexual assault in all 50 states. CASOL evolved from the grassroots initiative in the state of California (End Rape SOL) which successfully abolished the existing 10-year reporting time limit in September 2016. Organizers, chaired by Chelsea Byers, decided to take the campaign national. End Rape SOL was started by legendary feminist and LGBT rights activist Ivy Bottini. Ivy called a group of like-minded activists together in July of 2015, and word of this campaign quickly spread to anti-violence activists throughout the state. Only 20–25% of survivors of sexual violence report their experience because of pervasive victim-blaming, pitifully low rates of prosecution and conviction of perpetrators, denial of survivors’ trauma, and laws that prevent survivors from reporting. There are currently 30 states that have a statute of limitations law in place and each law is different. Reporting timelines range from 3 years (Maine, Minnesota, North Dakota), to 20 years (Colorado, Nevada), whereas some states never implemented a limitation (Arizona, Missouri). The inconsistency and irregularity in these laws systematically create unnecessary barriers for victims who experience trauma and re-experience that trauma through the very process of advocating for themselves and their experience. These laws are part of rape culture that protects predators and silences survivors. In abolishing the statute of limitations, we show survivors that justice has no time limit. CASOL is a fiscally sponsored organization under Nonviolence International. Nonviolence International is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization in the USA, registered as a non-profit organization in good standing in the District of Columbia.
