Bio
W. Kevin Wyllie architect, ncidq, leed ap
Chase Cothran was one of the best designers and students I ever had during my tenure at Virginia Commonwealth University and I do not state that lightly. The first project I critiqued for Chase he was using the underside of a mushroom for inspiration for a design. I asked him if he knew why nature designed all the "fissures" under the mushroom and he answered, "for the most surface area?". While this may seem trivial, he was demonstrating his unique ability to ask why design is before accepting a fashionable presentation. Chase then became a student in several of my my own studios and he constantly set the bar for the rest of the students in our program and he did so without an ego. Chase always asked for direct critiques and never seemed disgruntled with opposing views of his design. I have the greatest admiration for Chase as both a designer and a person and it is my greatest hope to work with Chase on a professional level in the future and any firm who is lucky enough to find him will never find a more well rounded member of their team.

This is where I ultimately learned how to read and effectively navigate a set of construction documents. Among other responsibilities, I worked along side architects creating details and floor plans. I also actively participated in opportunities of design, sketching studies for building elevations and rendering material selections in finish plans. My work also entailed updating and redlining drawing sets, interfacing with material reps, accompanying project managers and the principal on site visits and meetings, taking site measurements, photographing sites for punch lists, and compiling information for use in RFP's.
