Teaching adults part-time is highly rewarding. The results for the 2018/2019 cohort were excellent with all students passing their GCSE English and opening the doors to their desired futures. This was despite all sorts of hurdles they were facing in their lives: working long hours, parenting, marital difficulties, mental health issues, homelessness and for some, overcoming the trauma of difficult school days in their pasts. They told me they looked forward to their lessons which were a light in some difficult days. I'm glad I offered them a safe space to step into and pursue their future aspirations. Show less

Established in 2018, The Campfire Storytelling Collective's mission is to break down social barriers and start reconnecting communities through the power of personal storytelling. The more narratives we hear, the less possible it is for one to dominate; the less likely we are to stereotype and discriminate; the more compassionate a society we become. At the moment, we host sell out storytelling nights at The Moon & Maybe in South Ealing every month and we open our second monthly event at W7 Emporium in Hanwell this October. Our intention is to host more storytelling events across London and then the UK, providing opportunities for as many people as possible to get behind the mic and tell their story. Workshops will be a vital part of this process. Each participant is asked to tell a story they are happy to tell. No one goes to a place they don’t want to go to. But the act of telling of a story in this context creates listeners, develops empathy and provides a platform for a voice to be heard uninterrupted and a story to be shared. It is empowering, cathartic and demands visibility for those so often ignored. Show less

      • Jul 2004 - Aug 2017

I have been an outstanding teacher throughout my teaching career, working with SEN, EAL and all abilities. I have attended courses on a wide range of areas such as ADHD, Leadership and management (NPQML to be completed as well as subject specific leadership for English run by AQA), as well as being involved with the MITA research programme at the Institute of Education (Maximising the Impact of Teaching Assistants). As KS3 coordinator (since 2013), I have introduced and lead on a number of reading initiatives, eg library lessons, Accelerated Reader, Readathon. I have worked with NFER to assess and monitor progress amongst the less confident students and supported a storytelling workshop, from which our student went on to win the area competition. As curriculum developer (since 2014), I have planned and coordinated Transition Days for year 11 into year 12, as well as planned all the PSE lessons for year 11. I have also organised trips to the Globe Theatre for year 7 students to enrich their studies of The Tempest. This role also involves supporting the Head of Year with pastoral input: engaging with students needs re behaviour, progress etc, and working with parents and colleagues to further support students and their individual concerns and situations. With all the curriculum changes recently, I have researched and prepared the new assessment criteria for KS3 and created new assessments for KS3 in line with the new KS2 and GCSE criteria. I was also responsible for mapping the whole new curriculum, in the role of Acting Lead Teacher, working closely with my coordinators and line manager. Show less

    • Acting Head of English and Curriculum Developer for Year 11
      • Sep 2014 - Aug 2015

In my year in this role, the English team became cohesive and productive after many years without. We had Ofsted during the year and were awarded Outstanding. Our department shone with 'evidence of strong leadership'. Results were excellent that year due to my intervention: supporting coordinators, planning interventions with coordinators to ensure relevance and consistency across provision and delivery. We exceed our aspirational target (73%), achieving 76% A*-C and exceeded out ALPs target for A level. Show less
