This involved carrying background research of the area surrounding a proposal site, ordering, summarising and plotting Historic Environment Record (HER) data, gathering cartographic data and using historic maps to establish the previous land use. Fortunate to receive the opportunity to participate in the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Programme (UROP) working in the project 'The Marlow Warlord: warrior on horseback?'. This project involved studying the skeletal remains of a 6th century Anglo-Saxon middle-aged male found by the University of Reading near Marlow in the mid-Thames basin. This individual has unusual morphology of the right hip and leg and the key aim of this project was to establish the cause of this abnormality and in the cause may have been habitual horseback riding. A main part of the project revolved around researching common skeletal changes known to be caused by habitual horseback riding and establishing if these could be noted on the Marlow Warrior and x-rays.
