The words passion, creativity, determination and inspiration are often over-used. When describing Charlotte however, these words only begin to scratch the surface of her character and her approach to work and life. As Charlotte’s tutor for the ILM Level 5 Certificate in Management of Volunteers programme, I can honestly say it has been a complete privilege and joy to work with her and get to know her. I first met Charlotte at a training workshop I was delivering when she was working in a previous Volunteer Management role at Thames Hospice. Her enthusiasm for leading and managing volunteers was apparent and her keenness to learn and grow was evident, however it was her sensitivity to the nuanced nature of this type of role that impressed me most. She absolutely understands people; how to engage with them, motivate them and most importantly, how to listen and to notice what’s really going on. Charlotte strives to achieve the best possible outcomes for everyone she is working with and has the rare capacity to look beyond what is and to see the potential for how things could be. Her approach to learning is to soak up everything and to convert knowledge and theory into practical, achievable ideas that inspire and educate; solving problems and creating opportunities for others along the way. She is great at breaking down barriers and is incredibly persuasive, combining professionalism, compassion and fun. Charlotte is strategic, transformational, a fantastic collaborator and a brilliant leader. I cannot recommend her highly enough.

Press release sent out by EDRIC on 29/09/12 http://goo.gl/jnryI Dysmelia is the generic name covering a very rare condition, ‘congenital limb reduction defects’, which affects more than 15,000 people in the EU (possibly 30,000), with an estimated 150 to 300 affected babies being born each year. The lack of comprehensive birth defect registers means that analysis of possible causes has been greatly limited, and very few are known: TARS (Thrombocytopenia with Aplasia of the Radius Syndrome), Poland Syndrome, Holt-Oram Syndrome and Thalidomide are just a few of the known types of dysmelia. What is EDRIC is an EU-based, not for profit, non-Governmental Organisation actively supporting people affected by dysmelia, created to find solutions to meet their complex needs. The problem is that rare conditions like dysmelia are practically ignored by national health systems – which means that very few specialists exist who know how to treat dysmelic patients. EDRIC wants to support those with dysmelia by: • Improving their quality of life • Establishing the range of dysmelia-specific health problems and reducing the incidence of such problems • Identifying appropriate areas for research • Increasing the awareness of dysmelia-specific health issues among health and social care providers and patients • Creating an online community for patients, experts, researchers, health & social care professionals, & other stakeholders. EDRIC – is leading the way forward with a unique way of helping to meet the needs of people affected by dysmelia, by creating a new sort of network to be known as dysnet. • Health professionals with little or no knowledge of dysmelia will be able to seek expert help • The experts themselves can constantly exchange and update their information • People with the condition can get expert advice as well as support from their peers Show less

Head of Volunteering & Fostering and Battersea Communities

Jul 2015 - Apr 2023
Battersea Dogs & Cats Home is one of the oldest and best-known animal welfare organisations in the world. We currently operate from three centres – in Battersea, Old Windsor in Berkshire and Brands Hatch in Kent and last year our 323 staff and 1,000 volunteers cared for nearly 9,000 dogs and cats. The Head of Volunteering is a key role in the Operations Directorate, whose purpose is to guide the journey that every cat and dog takes when they come in to the Home. From reception to intake to assessment to rehoming – our staff and volunteers are trained to deliver the very best standards in animal welfare. Volunteers work in a wide range of roles across the Home, including kennel and cattery support, office duties, fundraising, representing the Home at events and working with local schools and community centres to educate the public about responsible pet ownership. The dog and cat fostering schemes provide temporary homes with volunteers for animals that may need extra care and attention until a permanent home can be found. The volunteer team has grown significantly over the past few years to over 1,000 volunteers working across our three sites, who last year dedicated over 91,000 hours to the Home. We are looking to further increase both the number of volunteers and the diversity and quality of work that they carry out. Our volunteers play a fundamental role in the Home’s continued success, and we want to ensure that they are valued and motivated, with the Volunteer service fully embedded and integrated into the fabric of the Home.
