I instruct composition classes. I began here immediately after I graduated with my degree. At one time I taught full time at a high school and here. I love teaching. • Aug 1976 - Feb 1977

On this job, I was introduced to the beginning of the computer age. After a customer received a loan, I typed the information into a typewriter that sent the information to the headquarter. In turn a contract was generated and the customer signed. I called delinquent customer, accepted payments, solicited customers, and balanced the cash everyday. It was rather boring, and calling people who were behind on their loans was depressing. I was often cursed, and I found I was not cut out for this type job. Show less

    • Agent
      • Aug 1975 - Feb 1976

As an agent, I serviced policy holders accounts. I mean I went to homes and collected their monthly premiums. I also sold life insurance to new customers. I enjoyed meeting the policy holders and helping them provide for their families in the event of a death. I won awards for selling the most policies in a month. But a new office manager came in and did not feel a woman's place was in his organization. My trainer did not agree with this policy, but he was helpless to help. Rather than be stuck in a position, I resigned. Show less

The company manufactured and sold geophysical research equipment across the globe. I was hired because I was competent in soldering and could use an oscillator to calibrate one of the "pots." Withing the "pots" were the brains of a system that used sound waves to examine an area for possible oil deposits. After each "pot" was finished, the unit's can (an aluminum device about the size of a smoked oyster container) was filled with an epoxy substance to guarantee that it could not be reproduced. Removing the epoxy would completely destroy the electronics. The elements on the cards included chips, resisters, pots, and leds. It was interesting beyond words. Show less

      • Apr 1971 - Dec 1973

This was indeed an interesting job. I ran multiple wires onto a frame, laced the wire into a harness, and soldered the ends of the wires to the plugs for the switching apparatus or the main access block. There were over 3600 wired ends in the final product. The company reconditioned switch boards used in offices, hotels, hospitals. The work force was primarily women who sat on stools all day and wired the switches for the frames I wired. This was just before chips and the digital avalanche. I learned about electronics and quality control. Show less

    • Manager of catalogue store
      • Jan 1970 - Apr 1971

This was one of Montgomery Ward's final attempt at staying in business. I did have some merchandise, but the store was primarily a catalogue service. Customers could order by mail and pick up merchandise at the store, or they could come in, peruse the catalogues, place and order, and pick up and pay. The store was closed and I had to move on.
