Fundraiser

Feb 2018 - May 2018
As a fundraiser for Public Outreach, I raised money for various different charities including MédecinsSans Frontières / Doctors Without Borders, and Bush Heritage Australia. This position allowed me to talk to people from all over Australia, and learn so much about current and historical issues. The working environment was very much team based, which was essential to boost morale whilst aiming to achieve essential personal short term and long term targets. Bush Heritage Australia in particular is a charity close to my heart, as animal conservation is of huge interest to me, and part of the reason why I chose a degree in Biological Sciences. It is definitely something I wish to pursue in my spare time, as saving the planet’s fauna and flora is something that I am incredibly passionate about.

Summer Intern
-
Jun 2016 - Sep 2016
This summer internship was spent developing and evaluating an Electronic Laboratory Notebook (ELN) solution to be used in the Collaborative Teaching Laboratory (CTL) Phase 1 at The University of Birmingham. This involved working with a small team of undergraduates and presenting our findings to the university’s heads of education. We based the ELN around Microsoft’s OneNote, and used Surface Pros as the hardware, although the ELN was accessible from many other platforms. Once this was developed, I adapted some Biology practicals (for example, simple techniques like gram-staining), and as a team we tested it on the ELN, as an example of how this could be used for all the STEM disciplines within the university with the aim of replacing regular paper notebooks.
