San Francisco’s Department of the Environment is a world leader in urban sustainability. I oversee the development and implementation of ambitious environmental laws that reduce emissions and move San Francisco closer to zero waste. As policy director, I ensure policies and ordinances are carefully crafted to successfully navigate the complex political landscape of SF while still achieving the desired environmental outcome. As lead public information officer, I also direct media relations. Accomplishments include: • Designing and implementing revolutionary environmental laws like the most comprehensive all-electric new construction ordinance in the country, the first-in-the-nation EV charging requirements for commercial parking garages, and the innovative ban on plastic straws and PFAS chemicals in foodware • Creating and implementing policy that reduced carbon emissions in SF by 5% over two years • Successfully securing $1,000,000 for the City’s mobile recycling program though AB 54 (Ting) • Developing and passing a suite of laws to reduce waste at large commercial generators and increase recovery and recycling at construction and demolition sites • Orchestrating San Francisco’s Global Climate Action Summit policy announcements to decarbonize buildings, reduce waste disposal by 50%, and source 100% renewable electricity • Triaging and simultaneously advancing more than 19 different ordinances, resolutions, declarations, and hearings through the San Francisco Board of Supervisors • Managing the City’s official support and opposition to dozens of State Senate and State Assembly Bills, many of which were signed into law and/or vetoed because of my advocacy Show less

With its famed Hetch Hetchy Water and Power System, the SFPUC is one of the most well-known and progressive utilities in the country. While I was chief spokesperson and lead creative director, I led aggressive proactive media campaigns that resulted in positive news articles and increased customer satisfaction. As creative director, I formulated the strategy for public engagement through multiple mediums of paid advertising and owned media e.g., TV, direct mail, outdoor advertising, and social media. No matter the issue, I reacted to unsolicited press inquiries and used crises to tell the story that I wanted to tell. Accomplishments include: • Significantly expanding national media coverage of key programs with positive stories on CNBC (clean energy), Reuters (green bonds), and ABC National News (water conservation) • Communicating to the public while serving as the SFPUC's lead spokesperson on NBC, CBS and ABC during infrastructure crisis events (sinkholes, floods, and water main breaks) • Addressing water taste issues with an emergency press event that generated TV and print stories and reduced inquiries by 83% during the agency’s largest complaint event ever • Driving awareness of key water infrastructure issues, conservation programs, and power initiatives with multiple front-page stories in the Chronicle and Examiner • Managing media response and strategy during the “Rim Fire,” writing press releases, and responding to the New York Times, USA Today, BBC, Al Jazeera, and other media outlets • Realizing the highest customer retention rate (97.9%) of any newly launched Community Choice Aggregation program in California through direct mail and targeted online and outdoor advertising • Writing and directing four award-winning television commercials for an EPA-funded water quality campaign (2011) and a drought public education marketing campaign (2014) • Managing budgets of $4.2 million, a team of 25 staffers, and 10 full-time consultants Show less
