  My roles at this weekly newspaper in Lake City, S.C., were several: editor, reporter, copy editor, photographer. I served as a member of the editorial board of the (Florence) Morning News, the daily newspaper within our publishing group, which also included three other weeklies. I also updated the News & Post website and established a Facebook page for the newspaper to boost outreach and interaction with readers.

  I developed sources, news judgment and concise writing skills through daily coverage of local governments, crime and public safety issues, and breaking stories in a seven-county area of northeastern South Carolina. I also investigated issues by requesting public documents under the state's Freedom of Information Act.

  I designed pages while writing clear, active headlines and using photographs, charts and maps to draw attention to stories. I developed news judgment by selecting wire stories for a variety of pages and sections, including the Sunday business section. I also stayed in communication with staff writers and worked with them to resolve inaccurate, contradictory or confusing passages in stories.
