Community Volunteer
-
Sep 2019 - Mar 2020
I participated in the Urban Ecology Centre's weekly volunteer programme for managing and overseeing the redevelopment of a local green space along the Milwaukee River which flowed through the city. This included working with numerous others planting, weeding, coppicing and grounds management of a local space in the aim of restoring its natural state. I developed particular knowledge of the local environment such as the issues of invasive species, the impacts of past industrial activity and how the community can aid with mitigating this. This allowed some application of knowledge learnt in university into practical applications and the natural environment around me.

Volunteer role which involved activities such as working part-time in a furniture resale store; accepting and processing donations, labelling these for sale and transferring them to the sales floor. Also assisting customers with heavy lifting, queries and advice on product maintenance.I also participated in a food-drive, where with a partner I distributed and collected food-collection parcels throughout various Milwaukee neighbourhoods. This was to provide food for lower-income families across Milwaukee through the Habitat for Humanity program.

Retail Assistant
-
Jun 2015 - May 2017
This was a part-time, weekend position as a retail assistant in a local DIY/home improvement and farm shop. The position was both customer-facing and also involved significant work alone preparing, cleaning and organising various aspects of the shop both for customers and other staff members.Tasks included a full clean of the premises each Saturday morning, followed by organisational work in the adjacent warehouse (box-flattening, product stocktaking, sorting), measuring and weighing animal produce for sale, assisting customers with various requests (key-cutting, product information, guidance, tool rental contracts and heavy lifting). I also performed a significant role as the main cashier for the business, as well as administerial work at the end of the day such as stocktaking and balancing finances. Other odd skills were improved, such as painting, resurfacing, construction of various appliances, and knowledge of DIY.
