    • Student Teacher at Northridge Middle School
      • Jan 2015 - Jun 2015

I had the wonderful opportunity to student teach eighth grade U.S. History at Northridge Middle School. Topics I covered were slavery, Jacksonian Era, Westward Movement, Immigration and diverse cultures in America, and the Civil War. Not only did I focus on subject matter, but I also focused on students' reading, writing, and speaking skills. During class, I noticed many students did not have adequate writing skills for high school. To help students be more prepared, I taught grammar lessons and focused strongly on structure. For reading, I modeled for students and had them do the same-I would read a paragraph and paraphrase what I read in simpler words. This practice also helped students develop critical thinking. For verbal skills, I would lead discussions (during warm up, reading, and lectures) for students, going over the main ideas. To help under achieving students, I gave constant positive feedbacks on their assignments. This motivated all students to perform academically better. Furthermore, to help students academic success, I created a study system that helped students develop their study skills. Since most students do not have study skills, I taught them through the note system, where students focused on key terms and main ideas. Show less
