Responsibilities at Morningtar included a variety of development. Key projects included a data extract system I developed which extracts pricing and company fundamental data from an Oracle DB, manipulates the data in order to convert it into XML based on a provided XML schema. This data is then zipped onto an FTP site for the client to retrieve. I then developed a number of data extracts for The Times newspaper which include trade prices such as open, high, low, close, net change prices etc. I gained excellent PL SQL & Oracle DB skills during this project, due to a number of constraints. Another project to note is a multi-threaded system I wrote which is responsible for storing various market’s close price data from very large text files, into our Oracle DB. Besides the projects mentioned, I was also responsible for maintaining the Java based websites, as well as maintenance and new development on C# .Net financial licensed tools. Show less

    • Technical Consultant
      • Apr 2007 - Sep 2007

My role at Integra involved 80% programming and 20% consultancy with clients in the investment banking sector. I developed solutions for a distributed real-time FX trading system. The system, written in Java J2ee, integrates with various external systems and databases, and relies heavily on threading, transaction management, JMS and XML. Data persistence is facilitated though hibernate integrating with an Oracle database on a Linux machine. I am extremely flexible, and was often moved temporarily onto different client projects where I gained a variety of programming skills and good client facing experience. Show less

Responsibilities included system design and java development, training all new staff in Websphere and portal development as well as on going maintenance of Vodacom’s Customer Service system. The team and I worked closely with an international IBM team flown in from Australia to design this complex and very business critical system. Vodacom is the second biggest brand in South Africa after Coca Cola, and hence the environment was extremely fast paced and deadline driven where late hours and overtime were common. The system had to be very scalable, reliable, secure and have a good performance. After 10 months I was made technical team leader and guided 5 colleagues, 3 seniors and 2 juniors through a great project, and successful release. Show less
