Since becoming a union delegate, we’ve started back conducting union meeting within our school. We now having a functioning Professional Problems Committee also. Being in the PPC Committee, it is our job to try our best to work with the Principal to peacefully come to resolutions in our building. We’ve been intentional about spreading who has a voice in the school, to insure all issues and concerns are fairly being heard and taken care of. In additional to conducting and leading various meetings, being a delegate requires me to attend one in person meeting per month, relay important information back to CTU members in my school building, seek additional insight and clarification by referring to our handbook, speak on problems on behalf of my colleagues, and more. I’m less than a year in, but I hear Chicago Teachers Union is a vibe! Show less

I’m currently teaching 7th and 8th grade mathematics. I’ve also taught 6th grade in the past. I am CPR certified and a mandated reporter. This school year we’re focusing on being more intentional with planing, generating small groups, and using data to drive instruction in the classroom. Our goal is to help every child in middle school progress and move closer to testing on grade level. As team lead I’ve been working hard to make sure the school environment is inclusive for our middle school students. Parent contact is a priority, to stay up to date with student success or lack theirof. We also have attendance incentives for students, more after school programs, frequent field trips, etc. It is our hope that school becomes the one place our students look forward to going everyday. We’ve also been implementing new programs to open students up to more opportunities prior to high school. In my time completing student teaching I was able to learn new techniques and attention to detail a Teacher needs to have in order to build a more successful classroom. I found building an inclusive classroom environment and behavior management easy to achieve. This gave me more time to focus on time management and how to plan in order to successfully teach. I learned more about creating formal and summative assessments, homework, lessons/ lesson plans, IEP's, and more. I also had time to attend grade level meetings and sit in on IEP's with parents. Using an app called caregiver, I was able to connect with families in my area and find different tutoring positions as needed. I’ve had the opportunity to work with three different families in Champaign durning my time on campus. Age range just depends on the needs of the child, and their ability to focus. I worked with one 4th , 5th, and 6th grader. Daily duties involved helping with homework, making sure the children stay on schedules (given from parents), and sometimes we’d go to the park or play a few games before I left. I also offer babysitting if needed, which the app allowed me to do. Show less

My summers were spent being a Sports 37 lead. Me and 3 other teens would plan and run the Sports 37 program with children a various park districts throughout the city. This helped teach behavior management, and being highly specific and intentional with the children. It also caused us to have to be creative because the more engaging and entertaining activities were, the easier our day ran. Planning on advance, saved unnecessary stress in the end. Love everything about this job, except the really hot summer days. Show less
