      •Joined this institute as a lecturer straight out of sea. It did not have a department of Marine Engineering. They were having training only for deck and catering ratings. •I had to formulate the training program for the engineering ratings, formulate the workshop training and obtain the relevant approvals from the administration. For approvals from the administration the legislative requirements had to be met and fulfilled. The training standards had to be in line with the STCW requirements of the IMO.•Legislative requirements for the work shop had to be in line with the factory ordinance of the labor department.•The first batch of engineering ratings was recruited in 1998 March. •The work shop was geared to meet the requirement for training. I did the lecturing in the theoretical areas and some practical training aspects. Having set up the workshops and the two boats for practical training risk assessments had to be done in order to minimize accidents.•Lecturing in Marine Engineering in theory and conducting and also monitoring of the junior instructor doing practical training in workshops was a part of my responsibility.•Maintenance work of the emergency generators and the training boats were apart of my responsibilities as well.•Maintain the quality management system of the department
