A festival event of considerable breadth the LMFF focuses attention on Australian Fashion. Its aim is to drive retail spending through the presentation of Autumn/Winter collections and associated high profile media. Events include fashion parades, retail experiences, art exhibitions and seminars.Contracted to the position of Creative Director Gary CHARD was armed with the task of strengthening the festivals position with a focus on developing new audiences.Given finite parades, budgets and seating capacities CHARD explored fashion extensions to attract audiences. Potential growth areas such as outdoor events, the broad arts programme and sponsor funded initiatives were explored and developed.

CHARD was approached by Lotterywest to create a dynamic sculpture promoting Western Australia at an international showcase in Hong Kong. The brief required that a sculpture representing the rich diversity of Western Australia, was built to travel internationally. The sculpture should exude charisma and intrigue with a potential lifespan beyond its initial use.Through a striking contemporary design CHARD turned tough outback construction materials into a collection of bold futuristic plinths displaying unique West Australian artefacts. The hollow lightweight base sections of each plinth doubled as effective packing cases for the precious display elements.

The Art Gallery of Western Australia approached CHARD to create a number of engaging exhibition openings with a focus on developing younger audiences. These ephemeral environments included interior design, catering, performers, DJ’s, and lighting themed to focus attention on the style of artist being showcased. The most successful of these was the 1995 launch of the Robert Mapplethorpe Exhibition where hand painted performers draped in exotic flowers were ‘exhibited’ in large glass display cases. Rich ambient sounds seduced the crowds as they dined on sculptural hors d’ouvres
