I started Glee Music and Drama Academy in January 2013, offering musical direction for a variety of performances. The Glee team started producing and directing showcases amateur and professional performers, including collaborations amongst the performers, and directed all music performances for many schools, including awards evenings, choir competitions, and school productions. After ‘Honk! Jnr’ I began directing a Carols by Candlelight evening. I first held auditions, selected and assigned voice parts. I then chose music and began rehearsals, composing harmonies as we needed them. To create variety in the performance I also arranged for the Durban Symphonic Choir and local musicians to perform alongside the choir I had trained.

Appointed as musical director of ‘Honk! Jnr’ in 2012, I began studying the script and score. The producers and I held auditions, selected and assigned parts and then began to work on an intensive rehearsal schedule. I taught the cast strictly from the score to maintain accuracy, and performances ranged from solo’s, duets and large chorus numbers with 4 part harmonies. Close attention had to be paid to rhythm as spoken dialogue was used during musical numbers.
