Birdringing Volunteer

Assistant Professor Arzu Gursoy Ergen directs this ornithology project. Mrs. Gursey Ergen and other volunteers and trained birdringers run this effort at Eymir Lake in Ankara, Turkey. Bird migration may be studied in detail in Eymir, an ecological stopover for migrating birds. The crew also carefully measures visiting animals' physiology and anatomy to avoid damaging them. The Eymir birdringing station is at least five years old and has several contributors. Our tasks start at dawn and end at 8:00 p.m. This project taught me about "collaboration," and how a small, unique region can support a diversified environment. Show less

I completed a month-long scientific summer school program at the Gulbenkian Institute of Science, focusing on "Microfluidics for Investigation of Biofilm Formation and Resilience." In this laboratory, under the supervision of Professor Arzu Çöleri Cihan and Asst. Prof. Başar Karaca, along with the lab team, we worked with various mesophilic and thermophilic microorganisms and examined the potential industrial outputs of them. I do not only observed the experiments conducted through this lab, but also practiced and helped my team. My practical skills include preparing basic-intermediate level media, performing various antimicrobial tests and antibiofilm assays.
