PoSSUM graduates conduct high-resolution imagery and tomographic reconstruction of noctilucent cloud structures coupled with temperature and aerosol profiles from research aircraft, high-altitude balloon campaigns, and now commercial spacecraft The suborbital PoSSUM ‘Noctilucent Cloud Imagery and Tomography Experiment‘, selected for flight in 2012 by NASA. Final Frontier Design spacesuits are supported through a NASA Space Act agreement and evaluated with the Canadian Space Agency. International Institute of Astronautical Sciences, the WORLD’s FIRST Institutional Sponsor of a Commercial Human-Tended Research Spaceflight The International Institute of Astronautical Sciences (IIAS) produces future scientists, engineers, operations professionals, and educators of the international space community through immersive educational experiences. Science and research produce peer-reviewed scientific publications, deployable space technologies, and inspires the next generation of space professionals. IIAS is an immersive educational institution; every course offered by IIAS serves to develop the student to participate and contribute directly to its professional citizen-science activities. Our students have studied mesospheric clouds from aircraft in remote regions of Canada, tested prototype space suits in microgravity, tested egress procedures and space suits in contingency post-landing environments, developed new methods to educate young students and engage under-represented communities, and developed a variety of technologies and experiments for high altitude, microgravity, or suborbital flight. Because many professional students have outside obligations, IIAS courses typically combine academic instruction provided through our virtual classroom with immersive educational components involving intensive field research.
