I worked with the Direct Business Banking Switch team to prepare customers to transfer to banks participating in the scheme. This was a totally new process for the bank. I had the pleasure of being part of a close team who supported each other to learn a lot of new terminology, processes and systems. I was part of a team that recalled and retrieved funds paid without a customer's knowledge, as well as funds paid out willingly by a customer who has later realised that they have been scammed. Incorrect decisions have long-lasting repercussions for customers so using evidence to persuade my colleagues that I made the correct decision was an important component of my work. Having access to personal details and financial transactions demanded maturity and confidentiality. This role required good time management, attention to detail and prioritisation in order to meet service level agreements, move cases down the correct pathways and achieve the best result for the customer. Sep 2012 - Sep 2017
In January 2017, I successfully defended my thesis entitled 'The uses and misuses of chemicals in the British home, 1930s - 1980s'. I benefitted from Arts and Humanities Research Council funding, and a collaborative doctoral award from the Science Museum, London, as well as the support and encouragement of my supervisors at Oxford Brookes. I conducted my research in archives and libraries across Britain, presented my research to my peers at conferences, but also to the wider public at university fun days and in a stand-up comedy format. Achieving this has required a great deal of planning, arranging access to a variety of primary and secondary sources, including travel, and managing my time as well as my budget. I analysed my findings, developed my writing skills and tailored presentations to different audiences. I spent large amounts of time working alone, at distance from my institution, yet maintained good relationships with my supervisors through emails and meetings. Show less

Curator, Science
-
Sep 2008 - Sep 2012
I took on this curatorial role as a trainee, which involved completing a part-time distance learning MA in Museum Studies coordinated by the University of Leicester. I enjoyed working on events such as Manchester's first Mini Maker Faire in 2012, and helping to coordinate MOSI's contribution to Manchester Science Festival 2009 - 2011. I wrote text, sourced images and developed interactives for the permanent exhibitions 'Revolution Manchester', and 'No More Waste'. I worked on the temporary exhibition 'Ernest Rutherford: Father of Nuclear Physics' and 'Making of MOSI' to celebrate anniversaries. Show less

Assistant Curator, Energy
-
Mar 2008 - Sep 2008
This was a temporary role to cover part of the Energy Curator's maternity leave. I continued projects to document collections relating to coal mining, stationary engines, electricity and gas. I was the point of contact for enquiries about objects in these collections, answering questions about manufacturers and handling offers of donations, as well as delivering tours. I participated in departmental tasks such as moving large objects, facilitating access at the Collections Centre and delivering family activities for holidays. Show less

Visitor Services
-
Sep 2005 - Feb 2008
I was a meeter-greeter, operated the switchboard, patrolled the site to provide a friendly and professional point of information for visitors, as well as providing security for museum buildings, objects and visitors. I worked in the shop, which included selling items at the till, restocking shelves and stock taking. I also took a new role of Visitor Experience Admin. I used Snowdrop (HR software for attendance and payroll), prepared the staff rota and assisted in the office with any other admin duties as required. Show less

This was my industrial placement for my BSc Biology course. It was a great experience because it allowed me to gain an insight into a large and influential corporation, but it was also valuable because it let me know that a lab-based career was not for me.
