Catlan Nguyen is the social media assistant for KPBS, San Diego's public media (radio and TV) station. She began this position in summer 2021. Catlan began reporting directly to me in August 2021 following the departure of her supervisor who was our sole, full-time social media strategist. This departure left a big hole in our communications department staffing and social media capacity. I relied upon Catlan to fill this void, requiring her to be the primary contact between our news and programming departments and write copy for multiple platforms, a variety of stories, all while learning the industry. Not to mention, she has been doing all of this while attending college full time and serving as editor in chief of a stellar college newspaper. Catlan has risen to the challenge. She is quick to get the work done, does not hesitate to ask for clarification or more information, brings forth great ideas, and confidently reaches out to staff for content, assets and collaboration. She is very open to feedback and applies the learnings to subsequent stories. I also rely upon her to select stories to publish on our social media accounts on weekends. She has a good eye for selecting stories that are newsworthy and will do well on social media. To say I have relied upon Catlan during the four months we were without a full-time social media strategist is an understatement. She has displayed incredible tenacity, determination and dependability. She took ownership of drafting nearly all social media posts and YouTube videos and was welcoming to revisions and feedback. She had the right balance of pride of ownership in content and willingness to learn how to make better copy. She brought forth ideas of how to present a story using audiograms and video and then saw it through to publication. She arrived at work every day ready to tackle her assignments and asked for more. She has been a sanity saver for me and an absolute joy to work with.

Catlan has been a vital asset to KPBS' social media team. She is creative and thoughtful in her approach to a wide range of topics. She's always eager to learn new tools, platforms, and strategies. Her numerous skills in photography, video editing, recording, writing, and graphic design were essential in helping us meet our social media goals. Catlan is a great collaborator and team player, but also successful working on her own and bringing a project to the finish line. You'd be lucky to have Catlan on your team!
