Annette Miller
Working in a world wide capacity, for a company as matrixed as IBM, while sharing the parenting of two daughters with an ex-husband and stepmother makes for a challenging and stressful life. In her role as a life coach, Cathy helped me work through techniques to help address the stressors in my life and learn to deal with situations over which I have no control. During our sessions, we discussed how to get the most out of meetings that I lead, but are held through conference calls involving several business units and countries. She had me visualize my role as if I had welcomed the participants into my home, and run the meeting with the same kind of hospitality. When I find myself getting impatient, or the meeting getting out of control, I find myself taking a breath and thinking about the work I did with Cathy, and I can quickly get the meetings back on track. Balance is always a challenge for working parents, and through my work with Cathy, she helped me realize that I can’t be all things to all people all of the time.
