As a HVRP (Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program ) Job Developer and Outreach Specialist I currently assist veterans in Va, DC, and MD who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. I locate these individuals on the streets, encampments, through referrals, self certification, and in local shelters. Assisting veterans with securing employment, training, housing, food, mental health referrals is key. As a Job Developer, I partner with employers and other nonprofit organizations and host job fairs for our participants.

Retired from the United States Department of Justice at the Federal Correctional Institution Fort Dix, New Jersey where I was an educator and law enforcement officer for over 21 years. At the largest federal prison, I was also a Veteran’s Affairs Coordinator, Job Fair Committee Chairperson, and a Re-Entry team member.I have 15 years of state and county service, and experience with Non-Profit organizations such as, Mercer County Community College, Head Start, Feeding 5000, Trenton Board of Education, and Rutgers University. I have worked extensively with veterans and individuals experiencing homelessness, substance abuse, and other socioeconomic issues.Passion for the veteran community comes naturally due to my familial connection to the United States Armed Forces. Originating from my maternal great grandfather Stephen A. Swails, who was the First Lieutenant in United States Volunteers. Lieutenant Swails made history as the first Africian-American solider promoted to commissioned rank as a combat officer in the United States Army. In addition, my father Joseph T. Jefferson served in the United States Navy during the Korean War and my brother Captain David Jefferson served in Dessert Storm in the United States Army. A native of Willingboro, New Jersey and current resident of Prince George’s County, Maryland. Currently, I am proud to serve the veterans at Friendship Place in Washington DC.
