Primate and Small Mammal Keeper
-
Feb 2021 - Present
Responsible for the daily care of a range of species including primates, xenarthra and marsupials. My duties include cleaning, preparing food, enriching, medicating, basic health checks and enclosure maintenance/design.As section keeper, I liason directly with the head keeper regarding the animals under my care. I have been allowed involvement in the veterinary side of the zoo including sitting in on procedures and assisting where possible as well medicating a range of species myself.I am able as a young keeper to suggest and implement fresh new ideas into the collection and I am proud of the changes I have been able to make e.g. introducing browse to folivore's diets to fit with their natural food habits. I have had the opportunity and pleasure of assisting in hand rearing small mammals as a result of parental neglect. I had sole responsibility of feeding and caring for the juveniles whilst ensuring their healthy growth, enabling me to learn more about the species and gain confidence in my nurturing skills. On top of progressing my animal skills, I am given regular opportunities to improve my public relations by leading encounter experiences and spontaneous animal talks when working around the public areas. I have learnt new management skills with responsibility for work experience students and training new staff members. I am also confident in using ZIMS software to maintain records of the animals under my care. I am emergency first aid trained and have received fire training.

I presented the findings of my undergraduate dissertation research to a selection of my peers and tutors, as well as a representative from UFAW. I was nervous about presenting to such a crowd, but I overcame my nerves and learnt valuable presenting skills from my practice and from observing others.
