Senior Fellow/Deputy Director

I started as a senior fellow researching migration issues connected to Brexit. UK in a Changing Europe (UKICE) is an authoritative, non-partisan think tank which does research and provides information about all aspects of Brexit. Part of its remit is to make that information accessible to the general public. So it does a lot of public engagement, especially with the media. I have appeared on the main media channels - BBC, ITV and Sky - as well as some of the more specialist programmes such as Law in Action, Woman's Hour, Question Time and the Briefing Room. I have also written for the Guardian and the Telegraph. I have given evidence to numerous select committees on the legal issues connected with Brexit, immigration and the European Union (Withdrawal) Act. I have taken on the role of deputy director since January 2021. This role invovles supporting the director, Professor Anand Menon and thinking about the strategic diretion of the organisation. This is a full time position teaching and researching EU law and employment law. I teach undergraduates and postgraduates, and supervise PhD students. In recent years I have directed the Centre for European Legal Studies and led, with Bentley, the initiative to gain the law faculty its Athena Swan bronze award (on promoting gender equality) as well as having a prominent role in the faculty's REF submission. including being an impact case study. My research is wide ranging, covering substantive EU law, especially the internal market, employment law, especially equality law and dismissal law, and in more recent years, international trade law, including WTO and trade agreements and in particular the UK/EU Withdrawal Agreement (especially Citizens' rights and the Northern Ireland protocol) and the Trade and Cooperation Agreement. A common thread in my research concerns the effective enforcement of rights. My current research, funded by the ESRC, looks at how low paid migrant workers in Great Yarmouth access help from a local charity, GYROS. Working with Costello, we are developing the notion of Pre-legalisation Studies, namely how people engage with the law without necessarily realising that they are doing this and the implications for them, their advisers and for law enforcement more generally.
