My role as a Materials Scientist at SmartKem involves the following:- Mechanical testing of thin organic films (adhesion, flexibility, hardness, etc)- Chemical testing of thin organic films (FTIR, DSC, TGA, viscosity, chemical resistance, etc)- Electrical testing of thin organic films (dielectric constant, breakdown strength, etc)- Characterisation of films (spin curves, thickness, cure curves, degree of cure, etc)- Dealing with suppliers who carry out specific analytical testing- Development of BKMs- Transfer of processes and BKMs to the internal Process Engineering team and to customers- Planning and development of experiments to understand the relationship between performance, composition and process- Generation of Technical Data Sheets- Tool ownership and calibration Show less

Research and development of networks of silver nanowires for use in transparent conducting networks. One of the main problems currently facing transparent conducting electrodes is that the most commonly used material, ITO, is both expensive and brittle. Silver nanowire networks are a promising alternative to ITO. Silver nanowire networks exhibit similar electrical and optical properties to ITO but, importantly, they are flexible, meaning that they can be used in technologies such as bendable displays and solar cells.
