A student becomes a PhD Candidate after passing a qualifying exam. In my program, this involved writing a grant proposal outside of the scope of my actual research and then verbally presenting and defending the proposal in an oral exam. Following passing this exam the program becomes more focused on research. During this period I have developed many skills. Science communication (written and verbal); figure making in corel draw and graphpad Prism, presentation preparation of over 10 presentations, preparing 2 manuscripts and submitting 2 grants Problem solving; using critical and creative thinking to develop and optimize 3 techniques in lab with new equipment and developing my own methodology.
