I'm grateful and honored to serve alongside the dedicated people on this Board who want to help young people in or seeking recovery no longer have to choose between their recoveries and education. As a person in long-term recovery myself, Serenity Academy and its mission mean the world to me. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ The mission of Serenity Academy is to help high schools students thrive in their recoveries and education. We accomplish this goal through community, education and advocacy. Serenity Academy is in the process of creating an Alternative Peer Group, basically an after-school program that brings together a group of high school students in or seeking recovery as an alternative to other activities. We believe the opposite of addiction isn't recovery, but connection. We are working at the same time to open the only recovery high school in Chicago which would be like any other high school, but with the unique supports that can help students stay in recovery, namely clinical services and peer support. No student should have to return to their old environment especially in the transformative adolescent years. Serenity Academy is engaging the community to raise awareness on what addiction and recovery look like to fight stigma and help save lives. We believe everyone deserves a chance to live in recovery. Wow - what an incredible group of talented and dedicated young people who have risen above their mental health challenges and experiences to help others thrive. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ A dozen college students had the opportunity to serve as Council members of a Mental Health America initiative that sought to highlight the strengths and opportunities of current university mental health services and recommend an informed path forward. We met monthly to discuss different intersections of higher education and mental health including: peer support, counseling services, differing abilities, financial support and technology. Our monthly conversations directly informed a report that paints a pretty unique and relevant picture of the higher education mental health services space. Show less
