Working as part of a small team of experienced teachers, I deliver lessons to all ages and levels. This includes in-company classes and visiting local primary schools, as well as on-site at the academy. I have used this time to continue my professional development by completing Delta Module 3, in which I achieved a pass with merit. Additionally, I trained and worked as an examiner for the Cambridge Advanced exam and gained lots of experience as an invigilator for both Young Learners and Main Suite exams. I have been working in a semi-official capacity as an assistant director of studies at the academy, offering support to other teachers and providing assistance to the director in matters related to students and staff.

Teacher Trainer
-
Oct 2015 - Dec 2015
Primary trainer on a Ministry of Education and Training pilot project. The intensive project aimed to bring methodology and language proficiency training to 60 Vietnamese teachers of English at primary and secondary level. I designed several workshops designed to meet the teaching needs of the 3 groups. I introduced new techniques and ran micro-teaching sessions to help the teachers become familiar with them and tie them in to the local syllabus appropriately. I also conducted in-school observations of 2 course participants to see how they are integrating their new knowledge in a practical way in the classroom. In addition, we worked on specific problem areas of the teachers' own language, such as pronunciation and listening skills.

Teacher mentor

Apr 2015 - Sep 2015
Teacher mentor on the British Council ELTDP project in conjunction with the Malaysian Ministry of Education. The project was set up to collaborate with core teachers in primary schools to gain better teaching practices and build relationships between stakeholders. I visited schools weekly to sit in on classes and discuss ideas to support the teachers in their professional development. I also liaised with the local district language office and the school principals. Each teacher or school took on a development project. For example, at one school, I assisted the teachers in the coordination of an activities workshop for the reading hut they had designed, with local education officers and parents in attendance. At another, I worked with a newly-trained teacher to support her in the development of classroom management techniques. At a district level, I worked with a colleague to organise and supervise a sustainability symposium led by the core teachers to cascade the learning to other teachers in the district not involved in the project.

Teacher trainer

Mar 2014 - Mar 2015
Teacher trainer working to deliver language proficiency and methodology to English teachers in Malaysian primary and secondary schools. I worked with 4 groups (110 teachers) once a week for a one year period to improve CEFR levels of the local educators and provide training in new teaching techniques and approaches. The course was blended learning with a significant portion of the work done by teachers online at home. I offered technical support and guidance for those who were unfamiliar with working online and looked at ways to help teachers transfer these new skills and online tools into their classrooms. It was necessary to develop good relationships with members of the local education office and the e-moderators who worked with each group. I myself trained and successfully completed a course to become an e-moderator for British Council online courses. In addition, I contributed a webinar on action research in teaching to the first British Council online conference and also moderated the sessions. I volunteered to take part in an observations project and went to several schools to observe the teachers I had been training and give feedback.

As one of the core teachers at the academy, I had a full and varied timetable of between 25-35 hours per week. I worked with all levels from beginner to advanced in young learner, teens and adult groups. Class sizes ranged from one-to-one to groups of up to 15 students. I added to my extensive experience teaching the main suite of Cambridge exams, including coaching a group of 3 teenage girls to successfully pass the CPE exam. In addition to this, I taught IELTS and TOEFL preparation and had private tailored lessons for adults with more specific needs. During the summer months I remained as the only teacher at the school and took on any incoming classes. For 2 summers, I had a special total immersion programme with two sisters, aged 8 and 6 in the first year. This happened on a daily basis for several hours each day. With their parents’ permission, we spent time outside the school visiting local monuments, various shops and supermarkets and so on to have real life experiences all conducted through English.

I came at the end of the academic year as a last minute replacement and stayed for the following school year. Much of the teaching took place after school as extra tuition for young learners and teens with some adult classes during the day or late evening. I also taught on-site at a local primary school, delivering lunch-time lessons to very young (5-6 year olds) and young (10-11) learners. There were additionally some in-company business classes at pre- and intermediate levels. As one of the more experienced teachers in the team, I also regularly counselled newer members and assisted with lesson planning, classroom management issues or acted as liaison with the director of studies to ensure matters of interest were dealt with satisfactorily.

I was one of the core teachers at this academy working with mainly adult learners from beginner to upper-intermediate levels. It was a blended learning experience where students worked on online activities first then attended a class with a teacher, either alone or in small groups of 2-3 people. We consolidated the learning that had taken place in the computer lab. Once students had progressed through the course they could choose to participate in Cambridge exam preparation classes - for general English or focussing on the Business suite and had weekly classes with me dedicated to their choice. The centre also ran workshops for specific functional skills such as Telephoning English or Small Talk which I led regularly.
