Founder
-
May 2009 - Jan 2012
Succession plans were achieved and my role as Founder encompassed fund raising; advocacy to close the achievement gap; and promoting Pathways to Education through presentations, deputations and various communications. Community engagement involved fundraising in both the private and government sectors, meetings with local communities and helping with the selection of host sites for replication of Pathways to Education Programs.

Chief Executive Officer
-
May 2006 - Apr 2009
Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Pathways to Education Canada, a Public Foundation created to reduce poverty and its effects by lowering the high-school drop-out rate and increasing access to post-secondary education among disadvantaged youth in Canada. The Pathways to Education Program is a proven effective model. As a result of its ground-breaking achievements, the organization’s first strategic goal was to replicate the program in 5 additional sites in Canada. The Pathways to Education program provides four key supports to ensure that young people will successfully complete high-school, continue on to post secondary programs and become actively involved in their career development. My role was to start up the organization by providing strategic leadership, management and fund development, contract development and criteria selection for grants and knowledge transfer methods to ensure efficient and effective operation and implementation of this Program in sites across the country.Key achievements include the successful replication of Pathways in 5 communities, 2 in Toronto and 1 each in Ottawa, Kitchener and Montreal. Results in all sites demonstrate a significant reduction in “at risk” students (students with 6 or fewer credits) in Pathways compared to the pre Pathways historical baseline. Annual fund raising targets were consistently exceeded and over $40,000,000 was raised from 2006 to 2009 for the replication. Two additional communities, Hamilton and Scarborough started in September 2009. Winnipeg, Kingston and Halifax started in September 2010. Calgary is in the application phase of the process. Show less

Executive Director
-
May 1992 - May 2006
Responsible for strategic leadership and the management of operations. The Centre serves about twenty-six thousand people annually who are largely disadvantaged or homeless and offers a range of medical treatments, health and social services, education and training. In 1992 there were 28 staff and a $2.8 million budget. By 2006 there were over 100 staff, a newly constructed $6.2 million Health Centre and a budget of $9.8 million. A vision of Community Succession was developed which led me to take on the challenge of creating and developing a program to deal with the increasing numbers of gangs, murders and other drug related crimes in this very low income community. A foundation of community development, an action research methodology, a results-driven focus and a passion for breaking the cycle of poverty for families, guided the process. This unique program was trademarked, Pathways To Education, an initiative funded privately and publicly to invest in ensuring that at-risk, economically disadvantaged youth graduate from high school and access post secondary education. The Program in Regent Park lowered a 56% drop-out rate to 10% and increased post secondary attendance from 20% to 80%. Under my leadership 12 million dollars was raised for delivery of Pathways. Accomplished a successful merger between the Better Beginnings Brighter Futures Program, Parents for Better Beginnings (PFBB), and the RPCHC. Show less
