In my 3rd year of Sport Science and Health degree there was a required placement module INTRA. During this time I worked in MedEx DCU, an exercise rehabilitation programme catering for a wide variety of chronic diseases such as; cancer patients (preparing for surgery and after treatment), heart conditions, diabetic patients, people suffering for claudication’s and high risk patients who need one to one support. I was responsible for conducting group exercise classes which often consisted of up to 80 people per class and as a result of this I am currently working there part-time. I am passionate about research in this area. Through working at MedEx, I also got the opportunity through my studies to undertake a 12-week placement with the MedEx research team where they are currently conducting a large study (including over 400 people with chronic illnesses), funded by the Irish Health Service Executive, evaluating the effects of MedEx on physical, clinical and psycho-social outcomes. As a result, I have developed a skill set in the ability to efficiently run physical tests (height, weight, sit to stand, sit and reach and grip strength test and the 6-minute walk test. Additionally, as part of the trial, blood samples were taken I became efficient in blood handling, sampling and storing. Show less
