Research Assistant
-
Mar 2019 - Jul 2020
As the lead student research assistant, I am studying the sexual dimorphism and population genetics of two imperiled fishes, the Sharpnose Shiner and Smalleye Shiner. Additionally, I am working with a doctoral candidate with research on the reproductive ecology and interannual variation in prairie stream fish assemblages. In conjunction with research I am responsible for general laboratory administration and management.

As an intern I have been attached to many projects within Dr. Kerry Griffis–Kyle Lab. My primary responsibilities focus on vegetation monitoring and response to fire. Some of my other duties include: - Soil sampling, to including temperature readings - Investigating small mammal foraging- Evaluating spatial patterns and environmental correlations of habitat selection- Collection and logging scientific measurements and entering field data collected into data base- Plant identification Show less

Research Assistant
-
Mar 2018 - Mar 2019
As a Research Assistant I assessed the effects of flow regime variations on the potamodromous Blue Sucker Cycleptus elongatus spawning movements, habitat use, and recruitment in the lower Colorado River, Texas. My primary responsibility for this project included ageing and growth estimations utilizing the fin rays of the state threaten species. Fin ray sections were digitally photographed using an Olympus SZX16 stereo microscope. Images were digitally manipulated to enhance the visibility and clarity of annuli, using ImageJ v. 1.48. The results from this study are being incorporated into the current environmental flow standards for the state of Texas. Developed proposal, preformed corresponding research, and presented results of the effects that variation of the natural flow regime has on the Gray Redhorse community in the Lower Colorado River. I identified recruitment in relation to abiotic variables, such as discharge and temperature. Determined age with scales, evaluated age structure, growth, and mortality of the Gray Redhorse population in the lower Colorado River, TX. In addition, I investigated the effects of streamflow on growth and recruitment. Some of my other responsibilities included: - Fish ageing and growth analysis.- Support lateral research of the laboratory in statistical models, and fieldwork. Show less
