Work with data from field scientists used to manage federal fisheries in real time. Interview field technicians on their random sampling methodology and evaluate data. Exercise data quality control to more accurately model fisheries and maintain scientific integrity of data. Utilization of Sybase, Oracle, OGIS, and APEX programs as well as the Microsoft Office, especially Excel. Data managed includes species composition, species verification, gear and position verification, special research projects, marine mammal and sea bird interactions and sightings, USCG safety and fisheries regulations present in the Alaska federal fisheries. Advise field scientists in real time on best practices, answer questions on Program methodology, and provide support in reporting harassment, violations, and marine casualties. Check in observers, check in and out sampling and safety gear. When needed cover remote field office in Dutch Harbor, including shipments of frozen specimens, sample station inspections in cooperation with NMFS Region and the fishing industry, over 30 midcruise assessments of observers, plant advising, gear check in/out, assisting vessel crew in obtaining official logs, and working with contractors to schedule their observers with meeting requirements.

Work in a shellfish hatchery for oysters (Kumomoto, Pacific), mussels (Gallo, Trossulus, hybrids), and clams (Manila). Care of larvae up to 20 days old including filtration, counts, health checks, feeds, water systems. Care of broodstock including checking for mortality, water changes, and feeds. Assist with spawning of diploid oysters, identifying to gender clams, oysters and mussels during spawns. Within one month moved to unsupervised independent work on swing shift, in charge of training and evaluating new hires for swing shift.

Independently collect unbiased data on the fishing methods and catch in the groundfish fisheries of Alaska. Created and implemented and documented sampling designs in the field on board commercial fishing vessels in the Bering Sea and Gulf of Alaska. Collected biological samples: ex. species composition, sexed-length frequencies, otoliths, fin clips, tags. Recording interactions with protected species. Utilized dichotomous keys for identification of fishes and invertebrates of the North Pacific. Utilized custom software for data entry and documentation, maintained detailed daily logbooks. Maintenance of sampling and safety gear in the field. Coordinated closely with diverse vessel crews and NMFS personnel to accomplish duties, ensure quality of data. Hands-on cold water safety training.
