Entering the private school sector, I found my niche as a teacher. Gateway Academy is a school that serves 6th-12th grade students with academic and social challenges. With a background in Special Education and Gifted and Talented Education, I use innovative approaches to work with my students to create learning opportunities that take the students from where they are to discovering their potential.I have taught many different subjects to all high school level students at Gateway: Art, Texas History, Yearbook, Algebra I, Geometry, Biology, Aquatic Science and Human Anatomy. Since coming to Gateway I earned my teacher certification in Life Science 6-12.In addition to my teaching responsibilities, I am also the Communication Coordinator and the Administrator for the FACTS/RenWeb database, where my duties include setting up classes, enrolling students, and running report cards and transcripts.I have recently completed the training and certification testing exam to become a Google Certified Educator - Level 1. My teaching career started in kindergarten at Dulles Elementary. I was responsible for teaching two classes of economically diverse students in half-day kindergarten. When the district changed to full day kindergarten, I was selected as the team leader for my grade. I taught all major subjects and created several learning stations for students to explore. My second position in FBISD was at Highlands Elementary where I taught 2nd Grade Gifted/Talented students in a self-contained classroom setting. I used many Project Based Learning lessons that encompassed all of the academic subjects. One PBL project was realized when I won a grant to purchase a set of artists' biographies for the school library. I served as the Campus Literacy Representative, and as a member of the SMART Goals Committee. I tutored 5th grade students in math and was a part of the Teachers as Mentors program, which provided a mentor for troubled students, one on one with a teacher. I was also a two time finalist for Teacher of the Year. Show less
