In this research, the changes made in the composition of the Atchafalaya Basin after the opening of the Marganza spill way were studied using fluorescence and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, the focus was to analyze the fluctuation of dissolved organic matter.2. In this research functionalized silica was exposed to a Humic acid (HA) in order to create a surrogate soil. The long term goal of the research is to develop a predictive model of sorption and desorption of agricultural chemicals to soils based on molecular level knowledge of the sorption phenomena.3. Oil contamination for the BP oil spill has sparked research in different cleaning methods. In this research project the effect the different microbes have on oil in a sea water solution was studied. The analytical part of this research involved determining the composition of the oil contaminated water sample using SPE and GC-MS.

      Advisor: Dr. Liesbet Lagae1. This research was focused on optimizing the surface chemistry for a new DNA biosensor. This meant optimizing both the click chemistry and the incorporation procedures. The click chemistry reaction in this experiment has four main steps which include cleaning, silanization, immobilization and hybridization. The incorporation is done in one step which takes place after the click chemistry is completed. Advisor: Dr. Liesbet Lagae1.       Advisor: Dr. Thomas Douglas 1. Snow and rain samples were collected in Fairbanks Alaska and tested for major ions and isotopes. The ∂ O18 and ∂ D were then plotted to determine the relationship between these values and the temperature at which the snow fell. Depth hoar samples were also collected to see if the snow pack affected the isotope values. This information could be very useful when examining cores and trying to determine information about past climates. 2. I also preformed field work, both on a glacier for four days and sampling in a permafrost tunnel. We used radar to take scans of the midline and transects of the glacier to determine how much ice the glacier was composed of. The work in the permafrost tunnel was to sample different ice features to help engineers determine building parameters.
