Bio
R. Michelle Woodward, MBA
It was a true pleasure to work with Carly! At a time when we were building the Marketing department from the ground up, she developed and implemented a cohesive content strategy. She quickly gave Fairway a compelling brand voice, writing everything from blogs and case studies to website content and sales/marketing materials. A talented wordsmith and prolific content creator, I could always count on her for both her big picture vision and her attention to detail. Hire her and you won’t regret it. - Michelle Woodward, Director of Marketing and Business Development, Fairway Technologies

The irony of writing a recommendation for Carly is that she would absolutely do a better job at describing just how amazing she is - although I'll do my best. I was fortunate to work directly with Carly in conjunction with the Fairway marketing team. She was primarily tasked with creating compelling content that captured the essence of what made our company great and why our customers should care. In addition to a litany of market-facing responsibilities her biggest impact may have been felt internally by creating content and communications that deftly captured the unique ethos and voice of our culture, fostering open and trusted communication between leadership and employees. Carly is a star, and I enthusiastically recommend her for any position where you need a thoughtful, intuitive and insightful writer.

My clients range from large to small, including a tech company that creates algorithms for NASA, a female-run branding company, a home-bakery business that was founded during COVID, a social justice nonprofit, an inventor developing a new bioproduct, and more. My specialty is helping clients develop unique personalities for their brands. Understanding a business's goals, values, audience, and tone is the first step in this process. I create/edit an array of content including blogs, website copy, web app copy, pitch decks, company stories, brand books, and more. In terms of subject matter, I have experience writing about software development, technology, the environment, and art. Show less

Content Strategist
-
Dec 2017 - Oct 2020
Writing and strategizing content for WWMU to further organization development goals and expand the WWMU community. In early 2018, led one-day Strategic Planning Retreat between Buenos Aires and San Diego for the Co-Founders. Along with content strategy and being a member of the Board of Directors, I headed up the team that created our successful Kickstarter campaign in the fall of 2016. We raised 130% of our goal and were highlighted by Kickstarter as a "Project We Love." Also, I founded and organized the inspirational social media campaign, #TurnUpTheBeauty, to coincide with our launch on World Peace Day. #TurnUpTheBeauty is now an annual event with participants from six different continents. We are still working on Antarctica! :) Show less

Content Strategy

Sep 2018 - Nov 2019
Helped to rebrand Fairway’s website from a storytelling perspective so that people could understand at a glance 1) what the company does and 2) what action do we want visitors to take. Within two months of launching the new website, Fairway scored a six-figure contract from a cold website visit. Developed a content strategy to connect the company's business goals with content across multiple platforms. 2000+ social media posts, 3000+ organic social media interactions in FY19. Published nearly 50 blogs in FY19. Wrote blogs on AI, the cloud, and data and analytics. Wrote and coordinated customer stories. Copy edited and crafted arguments for Statements of Work. Show less

As a member of the Guru team, I had a range of roles. I took dense information about topics ranging from art to greek immigrants, zoo animals to mechanics, and turned it into compelling, fun pieces of audio, augmented and virtual reality content for the location-aware Guru app. As the de facto marketing team, I wrote and strategized content across all of Guru’s channels including social media, email blasts, conference proposals, awards etc.—connecting Guru’s content to the company’s business goals. Also, I wrote and designed pitch decks and proposals for The Getty, the Space Needle, Qualcomm, the PGA tour, Dunkin’ Donuts, University of Oregon and many more. Accomplishments • Wrote the application that contributed to Guru winning $100k in funding from Qualcomm Ventures and being San Diego’s #1 Startup in 2017. • Guru was featured in Forbes, Inc., and Entrepreneur during my tenure and was awarded the Governor’s Historic Preservation Award in 2017. • Worked with Curators/Interpretative Staff from the San Diego Museum of Art, the National Hellenic Museum, Living Desert Zoo and Gardens and Palm Springs Aerial Tramway to create high-quality content for their apps. • Instrumental in bringing Guru's social media program from its early stages to a thriving ecosystem of relationships that generated sales leads. Knowing absolutely nothing about water in CA, developed a blog to explore my obsession with California rivers and our relationship to them. Within a year, was working at the SF Water Department in the Conservation section. Helped to develop SF’s first Graywater Manual, compiled data and wrote Conservation’s first Annual Report, and even got to participate in electrofishing surveys in the Biology department. Performance Artist
-
Sep 2000 - Jan 2010
Many years spent experimenting with the line between performer and audience, performance and activism. The central questions I continue to ask myself: how can a "performance" bring each audience member to a transcendent state in service of the common good? How can art spark action? Some projects include FiDi Dance Party (Dancing for social change in downtown San Francisco during lunch hour), Happy Unbirthday to You! (Strangers are made to feel increasingly threatened before a spontaneous unbirthday celebration erupts around them), Pelvic Service Announcement (PSA's of Joy w/ Brent Bishop on a traveling mini-drum kit), Joy Parade (One part zen koan, one part bureaucracy, and a whole load of fun), Sidewalk Love Letters (Explosions of chalk, poetry, street art, and synchronicity), and Tango La Melodia (Gypsy-jazz band from the Roaring Whenevers).
