This summer I had the opportunity to work with a Chief Design Manager at Walbridge on a Ford Paint Shop in Hermosillo, Mexico. This was different than I was used to, and I got to directly interact with our Process Engineering group, Durr, daily. A lot of this was 3D design coordination, something I had heard of on previous projects but not had the chance to work with on the job. It was interesting to see how, for example, an interference between fire protection and ductwork could be seen and fixed virtually before the issue arose on-site. I also got to work on my first commercial project for Walbridge in downtown Birmingham, MI. This brought new challenges in comparison to industrial projects; some were easier than others to resolve. There were similar time constraints but way more issues in terms of logistics and permitting. Certainly, politics played a role too, which is something that is way less common for industrial jobs.

This summer I had the opportunity to work on a vast amount of projects. I gained experience working with the Blue Bird expansion project, Lockheed Martin chamber building, DTE BDOOM, DTE Milford, GM Tech Center SDL, Meridian Recovery, and bids for the GM AEC and Ford KC Stamping projects. In total, that is 8 different projects with different situations and learning opportunities for me. The GM AEC and Ford KC projects were most influential on me because I got to see them through from the beginning to bid day. Seeing the entire process not once, but twice, was invaluable since I had only sat in on one bid day before this year. With help from my supervisor, I was also able to create an Automotive Battery research report, which details the outlook for the automotive battery field going forward. This is something the Walbridge engineering department will use in years to come to determine the pursuit of projects in this field. I became certified as a LEED GA (Green Associate) as well.

In the summer of 2017 I was an Electrical Intern for Walbridge working in the construction industry. I worked on-site at the Ford Van Dyke Transmission Plant as we worked on added 3 new transmission lines that would make Ford parts more modernized and efficient, as well as redid an employee and truck entrance. The supervisor I worked with was Kent Taylor, who is a technical engineer with over 30 years of experience. I was responsible for updating drawings to the database online as well as making useful observations on the floor, such as column, fire alarm, and sign location. With my supervisor, I would follow the electrical construction daily to ensure that lights, alarms, fiber optics, and more were being installed correctly. I also fostered Project Engineer skills through the database we used on-site called Prolog Sky, allowing easy access to information for anyone related to the job.
