Bio
Megan Mueller
Carlos writes what we see and know and don't understand in ways that ring true. He teaches, he mentors, he helps floundering young writers, he lends out stacks of books. He challenges people to look into the heart of things, be it through writing, teaching, or conversation.
Bethany (Beta) Harbison
There are only two professors I had during my time at Biola University who I can honestly say changed my life, and Carlos is one of them. He helped me grow from a panicky freshman into a confident writer, and I owe most of the compliments I receive on my writing to his instruction. Carlos is an engaging instructor, unafraid to push his students to their intellectual and emotional limits when he knows they are capable of more than they are giving. He asks the harder, more dangerous questions that few professors would dare to broach, and in doing so provokes deeper, more productive discussions than most professors will ever see in their classrooms. He is able to immediately capture the attention of any group of students by introducing familiar concepts from completely new angles. Yet for all his skill as a professor, what truly sets Carlos apart from most of his peers is the depth of his heart for his students. If I was passionate about a paper topic, he would share my passion. If I broke down crying in office hours because I was overwhelmed by my workload, he was quick to not just sympathize, but empathize. While Carlos is quick to bluntly shoot down a student's wrong or poorly-developed idea, he is even quicker to share in a student's joy or pain. Because of his rare ability to perfectly balance of being challenging while also genuinely caring, Carlos a truly unique, invaluable find among professors.

Our storytellers interview you at length, discussing, inquiring, listening, and recording your stories. And we take it from there. We render your stories in any of a wide range of literary genres and lengths and voices, in order to capture the meaning and beauty of your life as you have told it. We gather your stories into a volume, available to you and your family as a written record—forever. Whereas knowledge of Space Park’s warehouse procedures existed almost solely as “tribal knowledge,” I wrote the official training manual for warehousing personnel, making accessible the specialized languages of aerospace, SAP, and warehousing, in order for newly hired employees to learn their given processes and procedures. Tutor & Mentor: Torrey is an undergraduate honors program taught in the Socratic style, whose curriculum is made up of the great books of the Western Canon. I was one of 14 full-time faculty specializing in different disciplines, all who teach across the curriculum and who mentor students in close relationships, guiding them, advising them, developing their characters all throughout their time in college. Writing Program Director: I oversaw Torrey’s writing program, and my job included teaching students in weekly writing seminars and in 12 hours weekly of one-on-one tutoring; training faculty regularly in writing pedagogy; hiring, training, and supervising teaching assistants; providing guidance for and evaluating special student writing projects; articulating our writing program’s vision and maintaining its standards; and developing new curriculum and being innovative for a department whose standards of excellence are very high. Special Topics in Literature: Latino Literature & Culture (Summer Session, 2008), Department of English: Upper division course designed to investigate Latino literature and cultures, centered around one driving question—What is Latino?
