In my role as an occupational therapist in an inpatient rehabilitation setting, I evaluate and treat patients regarding ADLs, IADLs, functional mobility, and underlying skills associated with these tasks. I see a wide variety of patients experiencing diagnoses including stroke, traumatic brain injury, fractures, COVID-19, spinal cord injury, joint replacement, amputation, and sepsis. I identify functional goals through collaboration with the patient, their loved ones, and the care team (nurses, physical and speech therapists, physicians, and case managers) while determining the best therapeutic approaches to promote the patient's participation in valued and necessary occupations. This role involved three aspects, being an optical assistant, optometric technician, and office assistant. As an Optical Assistant I assisted patients with frame selection and lens options, order lenses, submitted vision insurance for glasses, received and checked in lenses from laboratories, and adjusted frames. As an Optometric Technician I recorded the patient’s family and medical history as well as the patient’s chief complaint in an electronic medical record system, obtained visual acuities, autorefraction, topography, Optomap Retinal Imaging, OCT, visual fields, and intraocular pressure.
