Gabriel Cao

Despite having two bosses, Carl manages to deliver all his deliverables in a timely manner (even if the demands of production and concept art number in the 100's on a weekly basis). Carl's understanding of typography, design, and motion graphics allows him to quickly and efficiently produce collateral according to the creative brief. I only expect his phenomenal portfolio of work to grow with this company and the next.

The Wende Museum of the Cold War is a unique institution located in Culver City that combines elements of an art museum, historical archive, and educational facility. It holds a vast collection of Cold War-era artifacts and provides educational programs to help people understand this important period in world history. In 2017, I was selected to design the museum's Annual Report, which showcases its most important statistics and plans for the board and donors. This project serves as a significant test of my ability to effectively organize and present complex information in a visually accessible form for a wide audience. The success of this project will demonstrate my skills in data visualization and my ability to communicate complex ideas in an easy-to-understand manner. Show less

As an intern at April Greiman's studio, I had the opportunity to participate in a number of website design and maintenance projects. One of these projects was for Miracle Manor, a hot spring retreat in Palm Springs owned by April. I was involved in the photography aspect of the project, including taking and retouching pictures, which were then used as website content. I also applied basic coding skills to help bring the website to life. My experience as an intern at April Greiman's studio and contributing to projects like Miracle Manor has given me valuable hands-on experience in website design and development. Show less

As a TA for a web design class, I had the responsibility of assisting the professor in providing students with constructive criticism. Throughout the 14-week course, I learned how to guide students in their understanding of web form. The class consisted of three projects that ran throughout the semester, covering the entire process of creating a functional platform, from building a concept to outlining and finalizing the design. This experience taught me how to effectively communicate with students and provide them with the necessary guidance to strengthen their ideas. My experience as a TA for a web design class has given me valuable skills in teaching, communication, and design criticism. Show less

    • Teacher's Assistant for Menno Cruijsen (Visiting Graphic Designer)
      • Jun 2015 - Aug 2015

I was fortunate to be the assistant of Menno Cruijsen, a Dutch designer originally from LAVA studio, during the summer of 2015 when he was visiting faculty at Otis and teaching an MFA class. Menno was known for his straightforward teaching style, and I was able to observe his methodology firsthand without any hidden aspects. I learned from him how to guide students in developing a project that made sense from start to finish, which is always the pedagogical goal but not always easy to achieve. My experience working with Menno has given me valuable insights into teaching and design methodology. Show less

I was hired and trained as an interdisciplinary designer at Shanghai Media Group (SMG), one of China’s largest media and cultural conglomerates with a comprehensive portfolio of media and related businesses. Working at SMG gave me the opportunity to learn about News Media deeply and to translate News content into an online platform. The experience inspired me to further my education and I decided to quit my job to pursue a Master's degree in the USA. As part of the team, I was involved in testing and experimenting with the usage of the main UI, which was designed by Flog Design, a global design firm founded by Hartmut Esslinger in Germany. This project gave me the opportunity to work on a high-profile project for a major company and gain experience in UI design for a cutting-edge technology product.
